Lídia Jorge is one of the leading Portuguese writers of the post-Carnation Revolution generation. She made her literary debut in 1980 with the novel O Dia dos Prodígios (The Day of Prodigies), but it was with A Costa dos Murmúrios (The Murmuring Coast), published in 1988, that her work achieved widespread recognition. Among her most acclaimed works of fiction are O Vale da Paixão (The Painter of Birds), O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas (The Wind Whistling in the Cranes), Os Memoráveis (The Memorable Ones), and, more recently, Misericórdia (Mercy). Her books have been translated into numerous languages and have received Portugal’s most prestigious literary awards, as well as several international distinctions, including the Günter Grass Foundation Albatros Prize, the FIL Literature Award in Romance Languages (Guadalajara), and, most recently, the 2023 Prix Médicis Étranger.The Murmuring Coast and The Wind Whistling in the Cranes have been adapted for the screen by Margarida Cardoso and Jeanne Waltz, respectively. Lídia Jorge is also a regular contributor to Jornal de Letras, Público, and El País.
